If there’s anything Louisiana gets a lot of in the spring, it’s rain (and mosquitoes, but we’re not going to focus on those).
Sarah and Jonathon’s engagement session took place on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend, and since they were coming in from out of town, rescheduling wasn’t really an option. So when I checked the forecast and saw rain predicted right in the middle of their session time, I knew we were just going to have to make the best of it.
On my way to our first location, I made a very last-minute Walmart run for a clear umbrella. I already keep several neutral umbrellas on hand for rainy sessions, but I didn’t own a clear one yet. With dark clouds overhead, I knew letting in as much light as possible would make a huge difference if we were going to pull this off.
When I arrived at my favorite spot on Bayou Desiard, I met Jonathan outside their car with two umbrellas in hand. The rain had eased into more of a drizzle, but it was still definitely raining enough to need them. For the first part of the session, I photographed one-handed with my camera in one hand and an umbrella in the other. I didn’t mind getting rained on myself, but I definitely wanted to protect my camera from becoming the victim of a sudden downpour.
Honestly, though, the rain ended up making the session even more beautiful.
The clear umbrella photos turned out so dreamy and romantic that I found myself grateful for the weather we had been so worried about. The soft light, moody skies, and the cozy atmosphere gave the entire gallery such a unique feel. About twenty minutes into the session, the rain finally stopped, which gave us time to take a few photos along the bayou without the umbrellas before heading to our second location.
Next, we made our way to Downtown Monroe, where Sarah and Jonathon absolutely crushed it in front of the camera. They were so natural together that you would think they do this professionally. Between the classic downtown architecture and the energy they brought to the session, every photo felt effortless and full of life.
To end the night, we headed to the top of the St. Francis parking garage, and it could not have been more perfect. The lighting, the skyline, and the dramatic post-rain clouds created the dreamiest backdrop for the final part of their engagement session.
I know I say this often, but God truly does know best. What started as a session we were all a bit nervous about because of the weather turned into one of my favorite engagement sessions to date. I’m so thankful I got to capture this season for Sarah and Jonathon, and I cannot wait to see all that’s ahead for them as they begin this exciting new chapter together. If you’re looking for dreamy photos that feel genuine, joyful, and uniquely you, I’d love to help bring your vision to life.
